2003 NFPW Conference

Live! On the Net

Internet use must be incorporated into media plans, not an afterthought, Carin Dessauer, senior fellow with the American Press Institute’s Media Center, told NFPW members. She says journalism students must be crosstrained for converging media.

Dessauer said the Internet can add depth with enterprise reporting. The content is dynamic with links to other resources, multimedia options, interactivity such as chats and quick votes, customization and layered journalism. Internet news is convenient, can be controlled by users with many options and is portable. However, the audience is fragmented, it’s getting harder to define news, convergence is hard to sell and many people are still disinterested in news.

Multiple navigation options are needed on an Internet news page, and Dessauer suggested a navigation block on the far right so it’s cut off when a page is printed.
