Presentation Title: Avoid Crash Landing in a Crisis: Communication Takeaways and Lessons Learned from the Airline Industry
Presentation Summary: Alison has experiences handling communication crises stemming from aviation accidents, employee-caused incidents, health-related events, social media missteps and data breaches. She will talk about lessons learned and how to come prepared to the arena by identifying your players and establishing offensive and defensive strategies. Learn about building relationships before a crisis and the importance of culturally appropriate responses. Discover ways to manage misinformation and use social media and traditional media effectively.
Speaker Bio: Prior to joining MSU, McAfee spent more than 20 years in the private sector as an award-winning public relations strategist, with expertise in corporate communications; government and media relations; issues and crisis management; employee communications; and event planning. Most recently, Alison served as a senior communications lead for The Boeing Company in Washington, D.C. From 2006 to 2019, she held various PR management positions in the aviation industry, serving as a primary spokesperson for organizations including JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Airlines for America. Before her time in the industry, McAfee was a publicist for NBC Sports and spent three years at Edelman Southwest, collaborating with clients that included Whole Foods Market and Texas Tourism.
Alison is currently president of McAfee PR & Strategic Communications, which provides communications consulting services to national consumer and travel companies. She holds a bachelor's degree in public relations from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently pursuing her master's in strategic communication and innovation from Texas Tech University.
