2011 NDPC Fall Workshop
‘THE BEST NDPC FALL WORKSHOP BY A DAM SITE’
Thursday and Friday, Oct. 6-7, 2011, Riverdale High Lodge
We invite you to be a part of our NDPC Fall Workshop, to be held at the Riverdale High Lodge, 401 3rd St., Riverdale. Dates are Thursday and Friday, Oct. 6-7.
The theme of this year’s workshop is “The Best NDPC Fall Workshop by a Dam Site!” Included are tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant and National Fish Hatchery (located 3 to 5 miles from Riverdale), plus the opportunity to learn from our two keynote speakers, Marilyn Hudson (Three Tribes Museum in New Town) and Dave Borlaug (president of the Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation in Washburn).
Hudson will speak on the impact of Lake Sakakawea on reservation residents; Borlaug will discuss publishing plus a brand-new Fort Mandan Foundation project – the Dakota Institute. We also have plans to have a town historian on hand to talk about the unique city of Riverdale, which got its start as a government town and headquarters for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the dam-building era. The corps still has its office there.
Read all about Riverdale Lodge and adjoining Knights Bar & Grill at riverdalehighlodge.com. This amazing facility has given the old school a brand-new purpose, using as its theme the school colors (red and black) and the team name (Knights). Dining prices are reasonable and the food is good; go to the same website for a downloadable menu. We’ll be ordering two meals while at Knights – Thursday night supper and Friday noon lunch. Each room has two queen-size beds and a large-screen TV, plus a private bath. Amazing to think these were former classrooms! Prices are about $85 per night, but half that if you find a willing roommate from among our group to share the expense.
On Friday, Oct.7, we’ll be heading for Underwood (about 15 miles from Riverdale) and T-Bones Steakhouse & Lounge. Prices here are reasonable as well – unless you want to try the Miner ‘49er Sirloin, which is $35. When you order it, you get your picture taken and you are timed as to how long it takes you to consume it! The more modest 6-ounce sirloin is $9.95. The restaurant offers lots of steaks in between those two sizes, but also has a menu ranging from shrimp and seafood to hamburgers and pasta. You don’t have to dress up to dine in this down-home-style eatery. (Note: For an additional $4.50, you can choose from Turtle Cheesecake, Snicker Pie Cheesecake or Hot Fudge Cheesecake for dessert ...)
Timing for our trip to Garrison Dam is certainly on the mark, since water levels in Lake Sakakawea were at record levels this year. It was the first year ever that the spillway gates were opened to release water from the lake for emergency purposes. You all know the results – downstream flooding and controversy over corps policy. The gates have since been closed and the spillway no longer spewing out water.
Whether or not you’ve ever been to one of our fall workshops, make this the year to join us! Jot down the dates – Thursday, Oct. 6, and Friday, Oct. 7 – at Riverdale High Lodge, Riverdale. It’s your chance to learn a bit of North Dakota history, get an insight into the publishing business, and get to know your fellow NDPC members.
